THE 7TH WORLD CONGRESS OF POLISH STUDIES

Published: 2022-09-09

The 29th issue of the journal Postscriptum Polish Studies is devoted mainly to the sessions of the 7th World Congress of Polish Studies. The editors of this journal, which is addressed to Polish language teachers in Poland and abroad, wish to record this important event for the scientific community and to give voice to its participants.

The history of the Congress dates to 1998, when a meeting was held to integrate Polish and foreign Polish philologists as part of the First Congress of Polish Foreign Studies in Warsaw. Subsequent editions of the Congress were held in Gdańsk (2001), Poznań (2006), Kraków (2008), Opole (2012) and in 2016 in Katowice, where the VI World Congress of Polish Studies was launched on June 22 under the slogan “Polish Studies at the Beginning of the 21st Century. Diagnosis. Concepts. Perspectives”. After the Katowice Congress, subsequent sessions were given a new name.

The 7th World Congress of Polish Studies was entitled “World Polish Studies – Archives and the Present”. One of the main issues raised by the speakers was that of literary and linguistic archives, also those collected in digital form, as constituting a specific culture of memory, and their protection and use in scholarly publications. Another important issue addressed in the papers was that of the positioning of the Polish language in relation to mono- and multilingualism, as well as reflection on the status of a language inherited in the situation of migration. There were also papers on the history, development and current situation of Polish studies in the world. The majority of articles published in this issue therefore constitute the produce of the 7th World Congress of Polish Studies and deal with the indicated thematic areas.

This issue also includes a Varia section with articles on different topics, two reviews of new publications and films from 2021, and an obituary.
