From Silence to Dialogue. Translations of Slavic Literatures 1990-2020

Published: 2023-02-08

In the volume entitled ‘From Silence to Dialogue. Translations of Slavic Literatures from 1990 to 2020’, we take a closer look at the last three decades of translation production pertaining to the Southern and Western Slavic area. The articles collected in this issue take into account cultural transformations, changing perspectives on translation, translatology, the reception of translation, as well as the functioning of the publishing market. Detailed topics include reflections on the issues of: translation choices in the circle of Slavic literatures in the years 1990-2020, reception of Slavic literatures in the mentioned period, the presence and absence of translations of Slavic literatures in other Slavic and non-Slavic countries, the role of  translators in the intercultural dialogue, distortion or clarification of the image of culture, language, literature in the Slavic context. Also addressed are issues related to the problems of publishing circulation or institutional support for translation initiatives within Slavic countries. The authors of the articles consider past and contemporary problems of the process of translation, the act of translation, reflecting on the possibilities offered by the intercultural dialogue, the conditions for its full occurrence and, in some cases, the reasons for its absence. They are interested in the image of the other culture, often limited or superficial. They point to quantitative and qualitative disproportions in the presence of translations from Slavic literature in various Slavic countries. They show that literary presence in the space of another country/language/culture may be conditioned by trends or requirements of the publishing market. The idea of the volume's arrangement is based on presenting articles that show in a panoramic way the translations of Slavic literature in a given period, taking into account the contemporary cultural perspective, the functional aspect of literary translation (including as an element of the target culture), translation policy and the publishing market.
