The purpose of the study is an investigation of the perception of the acceptability of selected colloquial lexical innovations (the verbs zadziać się (to happen [once]), zadziewać się (to happen [continuously or repeatedly]), ogarnąć (się) and ogarniać (się) (a broad range of meanings, for example, to cope with something, to understand something, etc.) by native speakers of Polish, on the basis of their idiolects. The study combined two methods: an analysis of online and printed sources, looking for examples of the use of these verbs in context, and a survey conducted among Polish speakers of various educational backgrounds and professions. The results show that these verbs are gaining popularity in the media, yet speakers’ attitudes towards them vary considerably. However, these lexical innovations are mostly perceived as acceptable only in colloquial Polish, which reflects the respondents’ language awareness.

The subject matter of the article is the vocabulary in audiovisual communications published by Polish sports videobloggers on YouTube. The research material consists of sic sports videoblogs run by sports journalists known for their work in institutionalized media. They are: “KOstyra SE”, “Prawda Futbolu,” “Prawda Siatki,” “Polsport – Michał Pol,” “Tomasz Ćwiąkała,” and “Foot Truck”. The discussion uses elements of the research procedure proposed by Tomasz Piekot to describe sociolects and professiolects. The linguistic analysis proves that the authors use a specific variant of the language in which the sports vocabulary (general and typical of specific sports – football, volleyball, combat sports) predominates and to a lesser extent there is journalistic vocabulary, vocabulary related to social media and colloquial vocabulary related to the profession of the speakers.

The article presents the results of the research devoted to proper names of hunting associations with sociolectal terms. In total, 2075 names have been analyzed, out of which 475 were identified as hunting dialect items. 76 extracted items have never been repeated and have gone under scrutiny. The quantitative method typical for statistical linguistics (the analyses of the quantitative structure from the excerpted vocabulary) has been used as well as typical for the cognitive linguistics quantitative research based on the analysis of formal and practical issues of the collected material. It helped to find the answer to the question to what extend the presence of hunting terminology reflects the values and traditions of contemporary hunters. The quantitative analysis (44 items occur only once and 32 of them occur twice and up to 93 times) and both linguistic and cultural ones made it possible to point out at least some factors determining the choice of the items such as the dialectal resources of the community of hunters, perceiving the extralinguistic reality and showing examples of appreciated values, creating their identity and the sense of belonging to the group. Another important factor is the educational aspect.

The objects of the research are word associations related to the ritual perspective (associations to the words baptism, funeral) and biological perspective (associations to the words birth, death). Linguistic data were obtained using a survey method in an online survey conducted between 22 April 2021 and 22 May 2021 via Google Forms. The aim of this article is to analyse word associations in the context of building a questionnaire for dialectological research. The survey is intended to enable changes to be made to the questionnaire for field research. The data obtained were organised into semantic fields and analysed from a frequency and generational perspective. The results of the observation are cognitive (the analysis of the results has made it possible to identify lexemes superior to the fields) and practical (introduction of changes to the questionnaire, as well as to choose a research perspective).

The article raises the question of a possible connection between the use of proper names in the works of the sixteenth-century Protestant writer Erazm Gliczner and his idiolect. In my research, I have examined the material excerpted directly from four, generically diverse old prints: Książki o wychowaniu dzieci (Books on Children Upbringing, 1558), Odpór na odpowiedź kwestyj (A Response to Selected Issues, 1579), Kronika żywota, nauki i spraw Pana Jezusa (The Chronicle of Life, Teachings, and Affairs of Lord Jesus, 1579), and Appellatia, którą się popiera i znowu wywodzi (An Appeal Confirmed and Resubmitted, 1598). All personal names present in the mentioned publications have been reviewed, while the detailed analysis carried out in the article concerns several selected anthroponyms, including the names Eliasz, Judasz, Filip, Józef, Grzegorz and Magdalena. The analysis presented in the article covers proper names used in at least two of these texts. In particular, I focus on the adaptation of foreign anthroponyms over the period of forty years between Gliczner’s first and last publication, viewed against the background of the tendencies that could be observed in the Polish language in the latter half of the sixteenth century. I address such aspects of the above-mentioned problem as the context in which a proper name was used and its referent. The analysis of proper
names excerpted from Gliczner’s works has shown a weak dependence of the author’s idiolect on the
onomasticon contained in his publications.

The aim of the article is to show how the concepts of hunger and satiety are conceptualized in the Dialogue of Divine Providence of St. Catherine of Siena. An outline of the state of research on the mystical language was presented and its characteristics were indicated. Afterwards, an analysis of phrases and collocations related to the way of understanding the above-mentioned concepts by this fourteenth-century mystic was made. The analyzed corpus consists of examples of metaphors containing words related to the domain of hunger and satiation, such as: taste, hunger, food, consume, table, feed, hungry, satiety and insatiability. Phrases and expressions referring to satisfying hunger or satiation, along with metaphors related to light and fire, are among the most numerously represented in the entire work. Since mystics are unable to fully describe their spiritual experiences, they use everyday vocabulary, expanding the semantic range of words. As St. Catherine directs her reflection towards the supernatural reality, she uses words expressing hunger and satiety primarily in the spiritual context.

Examining verbal fluency of six- and seven-year-old children, in this article Ewelina Zając presents results and analysis of her research on semantic verbal fluency in the field of proper names in the category “name.” In her research, Zając has used the minute verbal fluency test, the most common and the simplest tool for neuropsychological diagnosis. The aim of the article is to describe the level of verbal fluency in terms of the ability to generate names by six- and seven-year-old children, which, in the future, may be helpful in determining a norm for this task for children in this age group. The research material has been collected in a group of 60 children. Based on the test results thus obtained, one can draw conclusions, among other things, concerning the quality of linguistic processes, the richness of vocabulary, and the level of semantic memory.

The aim of this paper is to discuss the question of the representational function of pictures in context of the contemporary media. The common thesis that pictures express more than thousand words appears as questionable regarding the so-called ready images (in German ‘Fertigbilder’). They do not represent certain events but are available on Internet platforms offering pictures, which can be freely used for an actual text content, so that they seem to represent it. This phenomenon may be perceived as context manipulation. Although the picture itself is not faked in any way, its use outside the primary context may have a significant influence on its interpretation. Such ready images are frequently used as headline pictures on news portals on the Internet. Their relationships with the headline texts is discussed in the following article regarding to the classification of text-picture relationships by Winfried Nöth, based on several examples of items on the German version of the international news portal msn.com. The analysis conducted reveals that such headline pictures are only in rare cases dominant towards the headline texts, regarding their representative function. Typically, they stand in a subordinated or contradictive relationship to the texts, which significantly restrains their role as information carriers.

The article attempts to present ways of communicating the war crisis from a contrastive perspective. It aims to analyze the front covers of German and Polish weekly opinion magazines published from February/March to the end of 2022, related to the outbreak and enfolding of the war in Ukraine. The study is based on the assumptions of linguistic discourse analysis developed by Waldemar Czachur (2020). The subject of the analysis are verbal and visual elements of semiotically diverse media texts from comparable institutional broadcasters in Germany and Poland (weekly magazines “Der Spiegel” and “Polityka”) that co-create the war discourse. The analysis is designed to answer the question of how the covers of weekly magazines communicate the war crisis in Ukraine. In the conclusions, similarities and differences between German and Polish media discourse are presented, in which a specific construction of reality takes place, reflecting the content typical of a given culture and the patterns of action and knowledge of a specific community.
