At the intersection of two scientific areas – linguistics and media theory – a third one has formed – medialinguistics. The creation of discipline was influenced by both extra- and intralinguistic factors. In the process of shaping the scientific discipline, the object of analysis was formed, which is the media text functioning in a variety of forms: from Twitter entries to media hypertext presented in information waves. The subject matter of medialinguistics became clear, too: the speech activity reflected in different forms of media texts. The interest in media activity induced the author to turn to praxeology – the philosophical theory of activity, fully developed in the Polish philosophy by Tadeusz Kotarbiński. Praxeology indicates to medialinguistics the logic of studying speech activities: from building typologies of means of action, through the establishment of effective regulatory systems of action and identification of operating procedures, to the criticism of human actions from the point of view of their virtues and the criticism of the methods used in these actions. The article shows the formation of medialinguistics as a four-field scientific discipline. In each of the selected scientific fields of medialinguistics, the scope of research tasks and approaches to their implementation are specified. Highlighted areas reveal different sides of effective speech activity in the media environment: the means of speech activity, the regulatory means of implementation of communicative and social actions in media texts, the intertext sets, or media discourses and their structure, and finally, the demonstration of “language abuse” in the media, the principles of successful speech activity and criteria of its efficiency. Thus, the scope of medialinguistics tasks has been determined with its relations to the cognition of the laws of speech activity in the media.

The paper shows the multidisciplinary and global colour aspects in a complex and integrated research environment. Dualistic concept in colour science draw attention to the humanistic and social perspective of the colour sign. The linguistic sign accompanies the rich tradition of linguistics research. The visuality of colour sign opens up transdisciplinary research areas in contemporary linguistics. A new category of research focuses on the paralinguistic colour aspects in the media discourse. The communicative media dimension makes such concepts as visual content, visual language and visual identity the subject of interest. Reconfiguration of research fields means that it is time for a colour turn after the linguistic and iconic/pictorial turns.

This article discusses the specificity of women’s political slogans (catchwords) – slogans which are addressed to women, slogans whose authors are women, and slogans indirectly related to women. The research material has been supplied by Polish political slogans from the period 1918–2020, found both in the press and other written texts (on leaflets, banners, propaganda placards, walls, poster pillars, billboards) and in oral texts (political speeches, cries and chants at rallies, demonstrations, and protests). The paper examines in detail two aspects of slogans: pragmatic (related to the changing role of women as participants of political and public discourse) and formal (concerning the linguistic form of the samples analyzed). The analysis has revealed the following tendencies: the changing activity of women over time, reaching its peak in the second decade of 21st century; the evolving form of slogans, from the rhetoric of appeal and obligation towards slogans of increasing generality and with strong links to other texts of culture.

This article discusses features of verbal politeness occurring in three different types of the media interviews with athletes: standard interviews (on the radio), interviews typical of sports journalism (post-event micro-interviews), and the most recent forms of communication with athletes (interviews on the Internet). The research, which involved using the pragmalinguistic methodology and the linguistic-communicative approach, confirms that the participants of this type of interactions strive for cooperation and use Polish strategies of verbal politeness. The analysis has identified three groups of features of verbal politeness: phrases related to elementary politeness, phrases related to formal etiquette, and polite speech formulas.

The main objective of this article is to discuss the linguistic methods of building a relationship with the audience of radio information programmes. The research project involved analysing over ten radio information programmes from the following radio stations: Polish Radio First Program, Polish Radio Third Program, Radio RMF FM, Radio Zet, Radio Maryja and Radio Niepokalanów. These stations have been chosen on the basis of the criteria of ownership and popularity; they represent three different groups of media broadcasters: public, commercial, and social. The analysis has been carried out from the perspective of media linguistic research and based on the assumption of the persuasive nature of the media. The wide variety of programmes available on the media market makes media broadcasters compete for listeners by building a partnership relationship so that the listeners feel that they like privileged participants in the communication process. The linguistic analysis of the textual corpus has identified the following linguistic methods that perform the phatic function: inclusivus (the inclusive “we”), exclusivus (the exclusive “we”), informal and formal verb forms of address, colloquial language elements. Conducted through the prism of the use of language in the function of building relationships with the audience, this analysis of the most representative radio stations in Poland confirms the great linguistic creativity of commercial broadcasters visible in their use of broadly understood communicative-linguistic games.

By referring to complex and multi-component relationships governing the communication situation, Monika Grzelka updates the existing knowledge on the subject in relation to the new context of remote learning, which has undergone rapid dissemination. The complex tools provided by the linguistic pragmatics are helpful in describing a new educational event that makes necessary the presentation of two key frames of reference: a real situation in which each participant in the meeting is immersed and a virtual context common to all the participants. Grzelka argues that both these dimensions determine each other (and create a hybrid situation). She also points out that the conditions of remote learning make necessary the verification and updating of the mechanisms of influence used during a face-to-face communication event (e.g. taking the floor, maintaining eye contact, signalling emotions).

In her article, Patrycja Montusiewicz examines constructions with the modal verb shall + infinitive in the English version of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its German, Dutch and Polish versions. She has adopted the semantic category of deontic modality in a legal text the tertium comparationis. This comparative study shows the degree to which the analyzed text type is coded with the help of modal signals. Montusiewicz identifies factors independent of the type of text and requiring the use of modal forms depending on the internal nature of the grammatical system. Her main research method is, therefore, a structural and functional analysis based on the hypothesis of categorial convergence when coding the appropriate grammatical functions by units belonging to different layers of the language systems. Her research has shown that the selection of an appropriate equivalent for the expression of deontic modality is not determined by the formal similarity of the source and target language units.

The article contains a review of Bogusław Skowronek's book Język w filmie. Ujęcie mediolingwistyczne (2020). The author of the review considers the described publication to be a substantive and methodological complement and continuation of the earlier monograph by Bogusław Skowronek – Mediolingwistyka (2013). She emphasizes the values of the theoretical and methodological nature of the reviewed book, appreciates the thoughtful selection of the research issues undertaken, as well as the conciseness of the message and the precise course of the substantive argument. The review is descriptive and does not contain polemical elements, and its author clearly considers the reviewed monograph to be a breakthrough in the formation of a medialinguistic trend oriented towards the study of the verbal range in film.

The article contains a review of Marta Noińska's book Новогоднее обращение лидера государства как ритуальный жанр медиадискурса на материале российских, немецких и польских выступлений. Медиалингвистический анализ [New Year’s Address of the Leader of the State as a Ritual Genre of Media Discourse Based on Russian, German and Polish Performances. Medialinguistic Analysis] (2020). The review is of a descriptive and polemical nature. Its author is critical of the terms multimodal and multimodality used in the book, which in Slavic languages – unlike in English – refer to a semantic category and not to the channelization of the message; also discusses the interpretation of the terms discourse (modal) and text (modal). However, the reviewer highly evaluates the corpora of collected source texts (New Year's messages) and derivative texts (memes, parodies, caricatures, etc.). Despite the indicated shortcomings, Marta Noińska's publication is considered a model for researchers of other genres implemented in the form of mediatexts.

The article contains a review of Waldemar Czachur's book Lingwistyka dyskursu jako integrujący program badawczy (2020). In the first part, the author of the review introduces the reader with the content of individual chapters of the described monograph, and in the second part she discusses its selected aspects that she considers important or innovative. These include: recognizing Tadeusz Milewski and Leon Zawadowski as precursors of the language-in-use approach, approaching discourse linguistics in terms of not a methodology but an integrated research program, and considerations regarding the existence of a universal set of methods applicable in discourse analysis. The reviewer includes the advantages of the monograph: a summary of differences and similarities between Polish and German studies on discourse, as well as combining various, seemingly distant, perspectives and research approaches. The review is descriptive, does not contain polemical elements, and its author clearly considers the reviewed monograph to be important for contemporary linguistics.
